BREAKING! NYT - "High Oil Prices Giving Iraq Up to $79 Billion in Surplus Cash "

Tue Aug 05, 2008 at 06:48:52 PM PDT

For those of us who are sick and tired of so much of this country's resources going to fight the War in Iraq - a new article in the New York Times will make your blood boil.

Here's the uptake:

Soaring oil prices will leave the Iraqi government with a cumulative budget surplus of as much as $79 billion by year’s end, according to an American federal oversight agency. But Iraq has spent only a minute fraction of that on reconstruction costs that are now largely borne by the United States.

The unspent windfall, which covers surpluses from oil sales from 2005 through 2008, appears likely to reinforce growing debate about the approximately $48 billion in American taxpayer money devoted to rebuilding Iraq since the American-led invasion.

It's bad enough over 4,000 U.S. soldiers have died.

It's bad enough tens of thousands of troops have been injured.

It's bad enough the hundreds of billions we have spent on this war which should have gone to more important national priorities.

But we're spending money like a drunken sailor when the Iraqis are sitting on lottery money?!?!

WTF?!

Just in case you thought it wasn't about OIL - UPDATED

Wed Jun 18, 2008 at 08:56:09 PM PDT

It wasn't about WMD.

It wasn't about Democracy.

It wasn't about Saddam being a bad guy.

It certainly wasn't about 9/11.

So what was Iraq was about?

Questions for McClellan I Haven't Heard Anyone Ask

Fri May 30, 2008 at 12:01:51 PM PDT

During McClellan's comprehensove media book tour I've been hearing a lot of the obvious questions from the media, even from my fave Keith Olbermann.

But we all want to know more... because we know there are even more questions to ask about the inner workings of this White House.

So here are my questions for Scott McClellan - Reps. Wexler and Conyers please take note!

Hunting Sharks and Hunting Terrorists

Mon May 26, 2008 at 04:06:59 PM PDT

So, on this Memorial Day, and approaching (unbelievably) the seventh anniversary of 9/11, I saw a story in the NY Times from Reuters which made reflect on the fact we haven't hunted down and captured and/or killed Osama Bin Laden yet.

Will Obama close delegate/vote gap in New York?

Sun Feb 17, 2008 at 11:16:05 AM PDT

In what is shaping up to be a battle to the death for delegates and superdelegates coming into the home stretch for the Democratic presidential nomination - every advantage counts.  So all the "unofficial" vote counts we have relied on for all of our vote and delegate tallies to this point are being scrutinized for irregularities in every district.

We have all sat here since Super Tuesday thnking Obama lost New York to Hillary by a 57%-40% popular vote margin overall, with local results tabulated to show she would receiver 139 delegates to his 93 (excepting superdelegates).

But now, those further investigations have uncovered some startling irregularities...

Voices from the Polls - NY Times

Tue Feb 05, 2008 at 10:48:25 AM PDT

We are all tired of hearing differing poll numbers: national polls, tracking polls, state polls, and the like.

Today we not only cast our votes as citizens, but it's important to know the feelings behind not just our own votes, but those of others, if only to give a sense of perspective to our own points of view, and to how we feel our particular candidate of choice will need to address voters committed to other campaigns throughout primary season, and win over those voters from the GOP or independent third parties in the general election.

I found a very interesting feature the NY Times is running today entitled "Voices from the Polls" (link provided after the jump).

Hear that whistle blow

Mon May 07, 2007 at 09:40:11 AM PDT

Surprised no one has picked up on the Bush administration scandals regarding college loans and the lending companies involved.  There is a lot here that mirrors the corrupt and ineffectual way that Administration appointees are infecting our federal bureaucracy and corps of civil servants.

UPDATE - You might be a redneck...

Sat May 05, 2007 at 07:31:01 PM PDT

... if you can believe that during a time of war a studio has the bad taste to release a comedy about a bunch of misfit Army reservists assigned to serve in Iraq, but instead, through a series of mishaps, actually ends up crash landing Mexico thinking it's Iraq - called Delta Farce.

So if you thought anyone was taking the sacrifice of our soldiers and reservists seriously - think again.

Reverend Al's Backtrack/Oprah's Hip-Hop Summit

Wed Apr 18, 2007 at 05:36:45 PM PDT

One of the positive after-effects of the Don Imus scandal has been the realization that we as citizens can take action to curtail hateful speech.  We can put real pressure on advertisers and corporations at the Netroots level and see real results in a short time span.  So we can truly impact how much sexist, racist, and violent speech is released through various media.

Oprah Winfrey took on this issue yesterday.
